What the exam covers

The operations-level exam covers the properties and effects of hazardous materials, understanding the hazards, estimating potential harm and planning a response, implementing the planned response, and responder health and safety, plus the mission-specific competencies for personal protective equipment and product control.

Written to NFPA 470 (2022 edition), Chapter 7, with the mission-specific sections for PPE (9.2) and product control (9.6), and Emergency Response Guidebook questions checked against ERG 2024.

In Manitoba this guide matches the theory for MESC course 998925, Hazardous Materials Operations, which MESC requires before it issues Fire Fighting Level I seals.

Firehouse Fundamentals is a study aid for the written exam. It does not certify anyone; your training program and certifying body set and mark the exam.

Try a question

From the free sample: the kind of question every Hazardous Materials Operations test is made of, with the explanation you get after each answer.

  1. Properties and Effects

Why must you think carefully before putting water on a chemical spill?

    Show the answer

It may react, run off or spread the product

Applying water can leave an incident worse than the original problem: it can cause a reaction or incompatibility, create contaminated runoff, or spread the spill over a larger area. It does not lower a product's flash point.
